Mi Monte ("My Mountain")
Country life as a panacea... the kind lived in days gone by, where there was no need to go into town, because everything one needed was at home, on a hill with a view of the world. As a child I often heard stories and saw old photos of the farm my father lived on as a young man, the onetime McGuire Estate, in Saya Verde, Puerto Rico., The house boasted running water (!), a generator, garden, and perhaps most importantly: a library. Everytime my dad or uncles would talk about that farm, their eyes took on a glow...it must have been a real special place. The reference to "el periodico"...my grandfather Francisco Nazario was co-founder (along with Angel Ramos) of a newspaper called "El Mundo". As a young man my father Rafael ("Fayé") worked at the newspaper. Many years later, my dad was to take the picture of me used on the cover at the "parque de las Palomas" next to the Capilla del Cristo in Old San Juan. The El Mundo presses were located just next to that until the late 60's.
Monte is set as a “Guajira.”
